Rite Aid’s long run as a familiar American pharmacy brand has come to an end.

The company posted a brief notice on its website saying, “All Rite Aid stores have now closed. We thank our loyal customers for their many years of support.”

The site also directs former customers to information about pharmacy and immunization records, as well as where prescriptions have been transferred.

## A major drugstore name disappears

Rite Aid was founded more than 60 years ago and eventually became one of the best-known pharmacy chains in the country.

According to Investopedia, the company had grown into the nation’s largest drugstore chain by 1987, with more than 2,000 locations.

But the chain’s final years were defined by financial pressure, store closures and legal exposure.

## Debt, competition and lawsuits mounted

Rite Aid filed for bankruptcy protection in 2023 while dealing with heavy debt, declining sales and competition from larger pharmacy and retail rivals, including CVS and Walgreens.

The company was also facing hundreds of lawsuits connected to allegations about its role in the opioid epidemic.

As part of its attempted turnaround, Rite Aid announced a store optimization plan that included the immediate closure of 154 stores out of 2,284 locations.

The closures did not stop the decline.

## Missed deals and a shrinking footprint

The company previously had opportunities to combine with larger businesses. Investopedia reported that Rite Aid walked away from potential deals with Walgreens in 2017 and Albertsons in 2018.

By the time Rite Aid filed for bankruptcy a second time in May 2025, the chain had reportedly shrunk to about 1,245 stores.

Now, according to the company’s own website message, none remain open.

For customers, the immediate issue is practical: finding transferred prescriptions, accessing health records and moving pharmacy care to another provider.

For the retail industry, Rite Aid’s closure is another sign of how quickly debt, litigation risk and stronger competitors can erase even a once-prominent national brand.
