A Florida woman was released after questioning following the fatal shooting of her ex-boyfriend, a man who had previously been arrested in connection with his father’s killing, according to Broward County authorities and local reporting.
The shooting happened Aug. 19, 2026, in Deerfield Beach, Florida, according to authorities cited in the source report. Maurice Wright Jr., 31, was fatally shot after allegedly finding out where his ex-girlfriend lived and attacking her, a witness told Miami-based Local 10 News.
Neighbor Describes Loud Argument Before Shooting
A witness said Wright and the woman were arguing loudly enough for neighbors to hear before the encounter turned physical, Local 10 reported.
Neighbor Marcelle Thomas told Local10.com that she believed Wright had been abusing the woman and children in the home.
“What I heard is that the dude was abusing her, abusing the 4-year-old and tried to abuse the 11-year-old,” Thomas told the outlet. “So she had to do what she had to to defend her and her daughter, and she did that.”
Thomas also described Wright and the woman as having had a difficult relationship, according to the report.
Prior Murder Arrest Cited in Local Report
Thomas told Local 10 that Wright had previously been jailed after being charged with second-degree murder in connection with the killing of his father with a rifle.
