Fox News Takes Legal Action Against Tucker Carlson Over His Twitter Show

Uncategorized

Former primetime host Tucker Carlson faced accusations of breaching his contract with Fox News on Tuesday. This occurred after Carlson shared a 10-minute monologue on Twitter, presenting it as the inaugural episode of his new show.

Despite the unexpected removal of Carlson from the air in April, he remains bound by his contractual obligations with the network, which extend until 2025. Carlson has countered by accusing Fox News of fraud and breach of contract due to the cancellation of his show.

Axios obtained a copy of a letter sent by Fox News general counsel Bernard Gugar to Carlson’s legal team shortly after the release of the first episode of “Tucker on Twitter,” outlining the network’s allegations.

“This evening we were made aware of Mr. Tucker Carlson’s appearance on Twitter in a video that lasted over 10 minutes,” Gugar’s letter says. “Pursuant to the terms of the Agreement, Mr. Carlson’s ‘services shall be completely exclusive to Fox.’”

According to the letter, “Pursuant to the terms of the Agreement, Mr. Carlson’s ‘services shall be completely exclusive to Fox.’”

The contract also says the former host is “prohibited from rendering services of any type whatsoever, whether ‘over the internet via streaming or similar distribution, or other digital distribution whether now known or hereafter devised.’”

According to a source familiar with Carlson’s legal team’s perspective, his attorneys argue that “Tucker on Twitter” should not be subject to the contractual restrictions imposed by Fox News. Their reasoning is based on the belief that Twitter is not a direct competitor to the network. Axios reported this information.

By Wednesday evening, the initial episode of Tucker Carlson’s new show on Twitter garnered approximately 90 million impressions. It is worth noting that an impression does not necessarily indicate that individuals actually watched the entire 10-minute monologue. Nevertheless, Carlson’s presence and influence on the social media platform are considerable.

During his monologue, Carlson emphasized the significance of free speech and the value of diverse voices beyond traditional media outlets.

“In journalism, curiosity is the gravest crime,” Carlson said. “As of today, we’ve come to Twitter, which we hope will be the short-wave radio under the blankets. We’re told there are no gatekeepers here. If that turns out to be false, we’ll leave. But in the meantime, we are grateful to be here.”
