When the internet first began to revolutionize the way that we view content, society saw a glimmer of hope that we would escape the dystopian prediction of wall-to-wall advertising in every nook and cranny of our society.
This was especially true for streaming entertainment services like Netflix, to whom customers would play a monthly subscription fee for the explicit reason that it allowed the service to provide commercial-free movies and television.
Well, don’t look now.
Video streaming platform Netflix announced on Thursday the launch date and pricing for its upcoming ad-supported subscription option.
The ad-supported plan, called Basic with Ads, will become available in the U.S. and 11 other countries starting November 3, according to a press release from the company. The cost in the U.S. will be $6.99 per month.

The plan is essentially just plain, old television.
Under the Basic with Ads plan, users will see four to five minutes of ads per hour on average, with the ads each being 15- or 30-seconds long, Netflix said. They will play before and during whatever title the user is watching.
While the plan is only optional at the moment, the swift shifts we’ve seen in the entertainment ecosystem will lead many to believe that it’s only a matter of time before Netflix acquiesces to the inclusion of ads in the rest of their plans as well.
