I think we all know that Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg has made it clear from the start of his administration that he’d rather not prosecute certain crimes, and that’s something the House Judiciary Committee is taking very seriously.
On Monday, the committee is heading to New York City to hold a field hearing on local crime, and the witness testimony will focus on how Bragg’s pro-crime, anti-victim policies have led to an increase in violent crime and made the city a dangerous place for its residents.
Rep. Laurel Lee (R-FL) is a member of the House Judiciary Committee and she’s made it clear that their goal is to make the public aware of the consequences of district attorneys such as Bragg who choose not to enforce the laws.
“The American people really need to feel like our criminal justice system is fair, that all people are going to be treated equally under the law. And certainly, that does not appear to be the case in Mr. Bragg’s district,” Lee said.
Lee also points to the charges that have been brought against former President Donald Trump by Bragg as being politically motivated.
“It appears just really, really politically motivated,” Lee said. “That is just not the message we want to send to the American people.”
It’s not just the House Judiciary Committee that’s concerned about Bragg’s soft on crime policies, and it’s important that the public is aware of the consequences of district attorneys not enforcing the laws. We need to make sure our criminal justice system is fair, effective and appropriate, and that means not weaponizing it to attack those in power.
The House Judiciary Committee is doing the right thing by holding a field hearing to make sure Bragg is held accountable for his policies, and it’s important that the public is aware of what’s happening. It’s time to stand up to district attorneys who choose to not enforce the laws, and make sure that justice is served.
