Joe Biden has stated that the United States is contemplating the possibility of dismissing the charges against Julian Assange, the founder of WikiLeaks.

In February, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese backed a parliamentary motion advocating for Assange’s repatriation to Australia.

When questioned by a reporter on Wednesday, Biden addressed Albanese’s plea.

Biden replied, “We’re considering it.”

Assange’s wife Stella responded on X, writing, “Do the right thing. Drop the charges.”

Assange has been detained at Belmarsh prison in London since April 2019, as the US government seeks his extradition.

Prior to his arrest, he had sought asylum at the Ecuadorian Embassy in June 2012.

He is now confronted with charges under the Espionage Act related to the publication of the Iraq and Afghan War Logs.

If found guilty, he could potentially receive a sentence of up to 175 years in prison for releasing the classified documents.

The extradition of Assange has been paused since March when the High Court in London mandated that the US provide assurances that he will not be subject to capital punishment.
