A 16-year-old Kansas high school football player, Rylan Reece of Rozel, died after collapsing during practice, according to KCUR. Emergency crews were called around 8:30 p.m., and Reece was pronounced dead on the field roughly 30 minutes later, KCUR reported.
Cause unknown; answers could take months
Kansas officials said an autopsy has been completed, but findings may take up to three months, Pawnee County Attorney Doug McNett told KCUR. Weather that evening reached about 90 degrees with 57% humidity, according to the same report. KCUR noted Reece’s death is the fifth reported Kansas football-related death tied to conditioning or workouts in the past eight years. Earlier cases included college athletes and a 15-year-old high school player who died after complications from heat stroke.
Unlike several prior cases, KCUR reported Reece was not a large lineman; his school roster listed him at about 140 pounds, playing fullback and wide receiver for Pawnee Heights High School’s six-man football team. The district has two schools and about 140 students, with 17 boys listed on last year’s roster, KCUR reported.
Small-town grief and remembrance
At a funeral in a Burdett church, loved ones recalled Reece’s quiet character, love of the outdoors, and music, KCUR reported. Pastor Ryan Webster of Valley Community Church described him as “an old soul,” per KCUR. Pastor Jerry Hickey said Reece connected deeply with nature and enjoyed hunting for its calm. KCUR reported that his parents were performing CPR when first responders arrived. McNett told KCUR Reece’s mother had long volunteered in the Pawnee Heights district, and his father previously served as a county undersheriff.
The community shared hundreds of photos before the service, remembering Reece playing guitar, hunting, and fishing, KCUR reported.
The open questions
Authorities have not determined what caused the collapse. KCUR reported that the autopsy timeline could delay answers for weeks. No official cause has been released.
