Tuesday Test of Trump’s 2022 Influence Has Dems Despondent ⋆ The numbers were incredible. ⋆ Flag And Cross

There are but a few lingering mysteries out there in the political ether these days, particularly as it pertains to the coming 2022 midterm elections.

In general, pundits and politicos seem to agree that the Democrats are in trouble.  Joe Biden’s reluctant-to-run, slow-to-govern approach to the office has left the nation with very little confidence in the left side of the aisle, and very low approval ratings for the Commander in Chief.

The consensus thus far is that a “red wave” is coming to Congress, and the only question left seems to be how far right the wave will be coming from.

A Tuesday night primary in Ohio delivered at least a partial answer to that question.

J.D. Vance, the Trump-backed candidate in Ohio’s contentious GOP Senate primary, has won the nomination, CNN projected Tuesday.

Even as most candidates in the race ran toward former President Donald Trump, the primary was the first Senate contest of the year to test the power of his endorsement.

In the other marquee race of the night, Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine has won the GOP gubernatorial primary, CNN projected, beating back challengers from his right flank as he seeks a second term.

While Vance had previously has his own issues with Donald Trump, the big night saw the former President watching in closely.

Trump called Vance to congratulate him on his win Tuesday night, according to a source familiar with the call. CNN’s Gabby Orr reported that the former President monitored the election results with friends and aides at Mar-a-Lago, one of whom said he was “relieved” by Vance’s come-from-behind win.

The news will certainly deflate the Democrats’ hopes of staying competitive in 2022, as Trump’s massive influence over the Republican Party appears to remain intact.
